This is the Russian Soyuz Launch vehicle. It is still in use to launch satellites. It has 3 stages, with 4 drop-off boosters on the first stage.
It is a robust launch vehicle, and one with so many little details that the scale modeler can be kept happy for a long time.
I confess that I am cheating a bit. Brian Weiss, has already build one, and made molds for all the details. I bought a collection of these molded details to start with.
When I helped on the N1, we used Styrofoam over body-tube, with a single layer of fiberglass over the foam. This kept weight down considerably! The N1 was only 220 lbs at over 22 feet tall.
I am using the same technique with my 1/12 scale Soyuz. I am using a hot-wire cutter from Tekoa to cut my sections just right. It can be seen in some of the pictures, below.
These foam sections will be glued over 4” and 6” phenolic airframe tubing.
The finished rocket should be over 13’ tall, and will use 38mm motors in a scale cluster configurations (20 motors).
